How to Use the Michigan Sales Tax Calculator

Our Michigan Sales Tax Calculator is designed to be simple and easy to use. Just follow these two steps:

  1. Enter Purchase Amount: Start by entering the total amount of your purchase in the “Purchase Amount ($)” field. Make sure to use a numerical value (e.g., 100.00).

  2. Select Location: You have two options to specify your location:

    • ZIP Code: Choose your ZIP code from the “Select ZIP Code” dropdown menu. This will automatically determine the applicable sales tax rate for your area.
    • Tax Region: If you don’t know the exact ZIP code, you can select your tax region from the “Or Select Tax Region” dropdown menu.
  3. Calculate: Once you’ve entered the purchase amount and selected your location, simply click the “Calculate” button.

The calculator will then display the following information:

  • Purchase Amount: The amount you entered.
  • Sales Tax Rate: The combined state and local sales tax rate for your location.
  • Tax Amount: The total amount of sales tax you’ll owe.
  • Total Cost: The final cost of your purchase, including sales tax.

What are Sales and Use Taxes in Michigan?

In Michigan, we have two main types of taxes related to purchases: sales tax and use tax. Both are essential sources of revenue for the state, funding various public services. Let’s take a closer look at each:

Sales Tax

  • Who Pays: Individuals or businesses selling tangible personal property (physical goods) to the final consumer in Michigan.
  • Rate: The general sales tax rate is 6% of the total sale price. However, there’s a reduced rate of 4% for residential sales of electricity, natural gas, artificial gas, and home heating fuels.
  • Local Taxes: Michigan does not allow cities or local governments to add their own sales taxes on top of the state rate.

Use Tax

  • Purpose: The use tax is a complementary tax to the sales tax. It ensures fairness by preventing residents from avoiding sales tax by purchasing goods from out-of-state sellers who don’t collect Michigan sales tax.
  • Who Pays: You owe use tax if you:
    • Bring taxable items purchased elsewhere into Michigan.
    • Buy goods online, by mail, or phone from out-of-state sellers who don’t collect Michigan sales tax.
  • Rate: The use tax rate mirrors the sales tax rate at 6%.
  • Credit for Other Taxes: If you paid sales tax to another state on the purchase, you might receive a credit against your Michigan use tax.
  • Services: Use tax also applies to certain services like telecommunications and hotel/motel accommodations.
  • Local Taxes: Similar to sales tax, Michigan does not permit local use taxes.

Michigan Sales Tax Exemptions

Can a customer instruct a seller not to charge sales or use tax because they will pay it directly to Michigan?

Generally, no. However, if the customer has a “direct pay permit” from the Michigan Treasury that covers the purchase, they can instruct the seller not to charge sales or use tax. The customer must provide the seller with a completed Form 3372, Michigan Sales and Use Tax Certificate of Exemption, or the required information in another acceptable format. See Revenue Administrative Bulletin 2022-19 for details.

Does Michigan issue tax-exempt numbers? If not, how do I claim an exemption from sales or use tax?

Michigan does not issue tax-exempt numbers. To claim an exemption, you must provide the seller with a valid exemption certificate, such as:

  • Michigan Sales and Use Tax Certificate of Exemption (Form 3372)
  • Multistate Tax Commission’s Uniform Sales and Use Tax Certificate
  • Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement Certificate

You can also provide the same information in another format. See Revenue Administrative Bulletin 2022-19 for more information.

What are some common exemptions from Michigan sales tax?

Here are some common situations where exemptions may apply:

  • 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) Organizations: These organizations must provide proof of their exempt status and a certificate stating the purchased property will be used in their operations.
  • Churches: Sales to churches are exempt, but this does not include property used in commercial enterprises.
  • Government: Sales to the U.S. government, the State of Michigan, and its subdivisions are exempt.
  • Hospitals: Sales to nonprofit hospitals are exempt.
  • Schools: Sales to nonprofit schools and parent cooperative preschools are exempt.
  • Industrial Processors: Exemptions exist for certain property used in industrial processing.
  • Sales “for Resale”: Retailers and wholesalers can purchase goods exempt if they are for resale.
  • Rolling Stock: Rolling stock purchased by interstate motor carriers may be exempt.
  • Agricultural Production: Property used in agricultural production may be exempt.
  • Vehicle Title Transfers: Exemptions may apply when the buyer and seller have a qualifying family relationship.

Are there deductions available for bad debts?

Yes, third-party lenders and retailers may be able to claim a bad debt deduction under certain conditions. Please refer to Revenue Administrative Bulletin 2019-3 for more information.

Prepaid Sales Tax Rates on Fuel for April 2025

What are the prepaid sales tax rates?

  • Gasoline: 15.6 cents per gallon
  • Diesel Fuel: 18.4 cents per gallon

These rates are effective from April 1, 2025, through April 30, 2025.

Why does the Department change the prepaid sales tax rates?

The Michigan Department of Treasury is required by law to determine the prepaid sales tax rates for gasoline and diesel fuel every month. This is done to ensure that the prepaid tax amount accurately reflects the current average retail prices of fuel.

How are the prepaid sales tax rates determined?

The prepayment rates are calculated based on 6% of the statewide average retail prices for:

  • Gasoline: Self-serve unleaded regular gasoline
  • Diesel Fuel: Undyed No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel

The average retail prices are calculated for the period of February 1, 2025, to February 28, 2025, to determine the rates for April 2025. Each rate is then rounded up to the nearest 1/10 of 1 cent.

How will changes in the prepayment rates be announced?

The Department of Treasury will publish a Revenue Administrative Bulletin (RAB) announcing the new prepayment rates for gasoline and diesel fuel each month. The RAB will be published by the 10th day of the month preceding the effective month. You can find the RAB on the Michigan Department of Treasury website: www.michigan.gov/treasury.

Where can I find historical prepayment rates?

You can find recent historical sales tax prepayment rates for gasoline and diesel fuel on the Michigan Department of Treasury website. The website provides a list of RABs with historical rate information.
